If you own or have ever looked a little more carefully at a handmade carpet, you have probably noticed that it can change tones depending from which side you are standing. This effect is caused by light hitting the carpet from different angles and depending on the materials used and the length of the pile, the difference can be quite significant.
When you look at a carpet with the pile going away from you it will seem lighter, whereas if you view it with the pile lying towards you, the colors and details will appear darker and sharper. This is particular true in shinier carpets that have a pile made from finer wools or silk. This phenomenon can make a big difference in the choice of placement, so next time you see a handmade carpet, try looking at it from both sides and you might be amazed at how big the difference can be!
